A little about who we are.

Florida Legal Services, Inc. (FLS) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1973 to provide civil legal assistance to indigent persons who would not otherwise have the means to obtain a lawyer. A statewide support center, dedicated to ensuring poor people have equal access to justice. FLS fulfills its mission primarily by working with local legal aid and legal service programs to improve their ability to provide legal assistance to those who need it most.

Providing service delivery coordination, training, case consultation, and technical assistance to all legal service providers in Florida, FLS also is the coordinating organization for the first in the nation comprehensive Florida Supreme Court Voluntary Pro Bono Attorney Plan.

Legal services embodies two basic principles: Fidelity to our clients, and a commitment to our community which is bound together by our devotion to equal justice.

Florida Legal services is always here to help -- wherever we're needed. For example:

From 1995 - 2000, Florida Legal Services led the fight to end what Attorney General Bob Butterworth called legalized mugging through car title loans with interest rates of 264%. Six short years after seeing the end of its practice, bills were once again filed to bring back title loans. We, along with most of the old coalition, quickly responded and helped defeat the bills.

Although over forty (40) therapeutic uses existed for Neurontin and its generic counterpart, the Agency for Healthcare Administration refused to cover all but two. After months of advocacy, a District Court granted Plaintiffs' Motion, entering a Permanent Injunction ordering all of the relief requested in the complaint.

For many eighteen (18) year olds, leaving the Florida foster care system meant becoming homeless. After discovering that the state -- against its own rules -- wasn't setting aside funds so children could have a fresh financial start as adults, Florida Legal Services is helping them gain their independence. In a recent case, a child was able to leave the foster care system with $7,000 to begin her adult life. More cases like this are currently being handled by Florida Legal Services to ensure our children have a fighting chance.
